DESCRIPTION:
EPW - Cooke & Kelvey, London & Calcutta, minute repeater, 53mm, heavy 18K gold original HC with spectacular engraving and cobalt blue enamel foliate detail, applied front shield with initials, case bears London hallmarks for 1892, "E M" marking in cameo for casemaker Edward Matthews, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, SW-pin-set, fully capped lever escapement, at least 19J, gilt mvt marked "Made in London," s#2012. Gross weight of assembled watch 93.96 dwt (146.2 g). A notably beautiful English minute repeater for the Indian market. The movement's plate design with stepped area over the barrel is suggestive of Usher & Cole as its possible maker.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, good repeat function and tone, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some fine to micro-fine scratches, some mild haze to gilt surfaces; virtually flawless dial with negligible small micro-fine scratch just above center; excellent hands, finish loss to tip of minute, small spot of finish loss to spade of hour; case shows very little wear, dent at upper-left perimeter of rear with corresponding ding to cuvette, shallow compression type dent of front at area above-left of applied shield, very small protruding ding to cuvette shoulder adjacent opening latch, good engraving detail with mild reduction at shoulders, repeat slide with reduced engraving detail, blue enameling is substantially present with only some small bits of loss which are most notable at the positions of the two aforementioned exterior dents, case front opens a small bit wide of 90 degrees (to approximately 100 degrees) and has some play at its hinge, front lift springs are not making contact with lid to fully opened range and allow lid to tilt back approximately half way toward closed with gravity, cuvette has a bit of play at its hinge, applied front shield with some small bits of lead solder excess visible at its seat upon close examination; tight bow thinned at bit at top, replacement crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal.
